The Gartell Light Railway is a privately owned and operated 2 foot gauge railway which is open to the public on selected dates through the year. On its open days, the railway operates an intensive train service using 3 trains and is proud to offer a more intensive steam and diesel hauled train service timetable than virtually any other narrow gauge railway.
Our delightful narrow gauge railway is located in the scenic Blackmore Vale which lies within the south east corner of Somerset and is within easy reach of nearby Dorset and Wiltshire. Visitors to the railway can enjoy a unique journey through the rural Somerset countryside on the trackbed of a section of the old Somerset & Dorset line.
The railway also has a popular station buffet, serving a range of hot and cold refreshments, and a souvenir shop selling a variety of railway themed items. Our large free car park is located near to an attractive lakeside picnic area from where you can watch the passing trains!
Surface fair and level. Taxis can drop off within 5 metres. Most areas accessible for people in wheelchairs. There are no steps or steep gradients. Ramps and non slip surface. Wheelchair accessible cafe/restaurant. Two of the trains operated have been adapted to accommodate a wheelchair user. Anybody can use the facility.
