The Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) is a teaching hospital with close links to Bristol University and provides acute medicine and surgery, critical care, trauma, orthopaedic and accident and emergency services to the population of Bristol. It also provides the centre for cardio-thoracic services for the south west and for cystic fibrosis care in the Severn area.
The hospital comprises four principal buildings, the original Old Building, the King Edward VII Building, which is opposite the Old Building on Upper Maudlin Street, the Queen's Building, which is also on Upper Maudlin Street. The BRI's new ward block has now begun opening to patients. The new building is situated behind the Queen's Building, and is accessible from the main entrance to the BRI on Upper Maudlin Street.
