Shared Care Network is the national organisation which promotes short breaks for disabled children in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Network supports over 200 local schemes who link disabled children with people in the community providing regular short-term care - not in institutions, but in family homes. Most children who use these short breaks have learning difficulties, but they may have physical disabilities, complex health care needs, HIV or sensory impairment. These breaks help to combat the isolation felt by disabled children, enabling them to meet new people and become part of a 'second family', widening their social life and offering new experiences. Family-based short breaks also give parents of disabled children space to recharge their batteries and to spend quality time with their other children. Shared Care Network can provide parents with details of family-based short breaks schemes operating in their area.
