How To ... Get the most out of searches
To get the most out of keyword searches, there are several different ways that you can enter your search criteria.
One tip is to keep your search simple. A couple of words will usually do.
For example, social club, rather than evening social club for adults on a Monday.
Well Aware works like Google. If you put in your search words without double quote marks, Well Aware will look first for records with both those keywords in. If you put them in with double quote marks – for example, “social club” – then Well Aware will look first for records with that phrase in.
Once Well Aware has found all the records with both keywords, it will then also list those records with only one of the keywords in them. So if there aren’t any records with both words in, records with only one of them will appear at the top of the results list.
If you only want to find organisations that serve your area, you can type a place or postcode into the second box. If you then perform a keyword search such as social club, you will get a list of services offering social clubs starting with the nearest one to you first. You can also specify whether you want to see services within a 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 or 50 mile radius of the specified place or postcode.
To further refine your search, click on 'Try an Advanced Search'. This will give you the option to apply additional filters to your search. For example, if you only want to find organisations which provide services in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, tick the boxes next to these options. Or, if you only want to see organisations which offer services relating to 'Emotional Support', tick this box before performing your search. You can also add filters relating to who services are aimed at - for example, carers, parents, older people, etc. You can apply as many filters as you like. To remove a filter, just click on the box next to it to 'untick' it.
Once you have carried out a search and have created a list of results, you can apply the same filters that were available under 'Advanced Search'. These are available on the right side of the screen.
Simply click on one of the arrows to see the filters that are available, then tick the box next to the filter(s) you want to use and click on 'Apply'. Your results list will then be updated accordingly. As before, to remove a filter simply click on the box next to it to 'untick' it.
