- Are you being pressured to get married against your will?
- Do you fear to bring shame or dishonour on your family?
- Have you been emotionally or physically abused?
- Are you confused about what they say scripture demands of you?
- Do you worry about being disowned?
If you are concerned about any of the above, please call us in confidence. Culture, Religion and Tradition are not an excuse; forced marriage is illegal in the UK.
Karma Nirvana is a registered Charity that supports victims and survivors of forced marriage and honour based abuse. The words Karma Nirvana simply mean ‘Peace and Enlightenment’ as we hope our victims will achieve this through our work. Karma Nirvana has one clear aim: to stop the scandal of forced marriage and honour-based violence.
Honour-based abuse refers to an incident or crime which has or may have been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family and/or community.
An honour killing is sometimes carried out when victims are perceived to have caused irreversible dishonour to the family name by engaging in Western behaviours. It could be that the victim has a boyfriend or has refused an arranged marriage.
A forced marriage is very different from an arranged marriage. A forced marriage is where one or both spouses do not (or in the case of some adults with learning or physical disabilities, cannot) consent to the marriage and duress is involved. Duress can include physical, psychological, financial, sexual and emotional pressure.
