Organisation Name
Avon Breast Screening

Avon Breast Screening Unit is the breast screening centre in Bristol offering screening for breast cancer. It is located in the Central Health Clinic in the centre of Bristol and is approximately a quarter of a mile from Bristol Royal Infirmary. It has a full multidisciplinary team of two consultant radiologists and one breast clinician, radiographers, breast care nurse and two breast surgeons, who attend for two sessions per week. The Unit comprises five X-ray units, two ultrasound units and one prone table biopsy unit at the Central Health Clinic and two mobile X-ray units to reach outlying areas of the regions. All initial screening staff are females.

Women under 50
Screening has not yet definitely been proven to be effective in women under 50 years of age. However breast awareness is important for these women and any abnormalities should be referred to the GP and not the breast centre.

Women between 50 and 70
Women in the catchment area will automatically receive an invitation to attend a breast screening clinic between their 50th and 53rd birthday with an appointment, together with a leaflet giving information about breast screening. The appointment will either be at the Avon Breast Screening Unit or the mobile van. Appointments are not issued alphabetically but by NHS numbers. Screening will take place once every three years (until aged 70). Appointments can be altered by calling the Breast Screening Centre.

Women over 70
No invitation will be sent from the Breast Centre. However, women may ring the Breast Centre for an appointment either at the mobile van or Breast Centre and can ask for an appointment every three years. Again, breast awareness is still important for this age group.

There is no specific parking for disabled drivers but they can use the small car park at front of building.
